EPIC: The Musical | Review

Looking for an awesome musical for movie night? Here is my recommendation!

EPIC: The Musical is a spectacular choice for movie night! It’s action packed, heart-warming, heart-wrenching, and truly epic.

What is EPIC about?

EPIC: The Musical is an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey created with the help of social media platforms. It’s currently available to watch on Youtube.  It was composed and directed by Jorge ‘Jay’ Rivera-Herrans.

It follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his 20 year journey home. The first act solely follows Odysseus’s experience trying to get home. The second act is where Penelope, Odysseus’s wife and Queen of Ithaca, finally comes on screen alongside Telemachus, Odysseus’s son and Prince of Ithaca. We watch as Odysseus battles gods, monsters, men, and sometimes, himself.

EPIC’s creator, singers, and fandom.

Jorge Rivera-Herrans, referred to by fans as ‘Jay’ is the creator of Epic The Musical. Jay also is the voice of Oydsseus. Jay began with “My Heart Says Go” based on his own conflict with his parents about switching his college major from pre-med to theater. Later on he would create EPIC and started auditions in April 2021.

The most notable members of the cast are, Jay himself as Oydsseus, Anna Lea as Penelope, Miguel Veloso aka ‘Mico’ as Telemachus, Steven Rodridguez as Poseidon, Luke Holt as Zeus, Troy Doherty as Hermes, Teagan Earley as Athena,  Aryon Alexander as Antinous, Armando Julian as Eurylochus, Steven Dookie as Polites, and so many more!

The fandom of EPIC has grown from one man with a dream to people worldwide. You can find EPIC cosplayers at conventions, social media edits of EPIC, even a person in your class might be an EPIC fan.

EPIC’s songs

Jay, the creator, wanted to give the songs, especially the action songs, a very video game-like feel. Meanwhile, on his Youtube channel he gives deep explanations of all the songs. He speaks about how the notes and melodies reflect each character’s thoughts and emotions. He also has certain instruments that identify or are typically used to represent a character. For example, Oydsseus’s instrument is an electric guitar.

EPIC has 9 sagas with a total of 40 songs. Each of the 2 acts contain 20 songs. EPIC has a song for everyone whether it’s something you would like to listen to while exercising that will make you feel Dangerous, a love song you would love to fall in love with. Or a song you want to listen to while you cry that you’re not sorry for. EPIC has a song for any mood!
