United States base in Jordan Attacked

On Sunday evening a United States base in Jordan was attacked resulting in the deaths of three US Soldiers and left over 40 injured. The three US soldiers killed in the attack were identified Monday as Sgt. William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia, according to the Defense Department.

US officials say that the drone which caused the attack was fired by Iranian backed militants and appears to have been fired from Iraq. There have been over 160 attacks on US bases in the middle east since October 7th 2023. However this is the first that resulted in the deaths of Americans. It is an immense escalation in the tensions between the United States and Iran, with fears that a regional war is becoming more and more likely.

President Biden has said that, “We shall respond.” and “I don’t think we need a wider war in the Middle East.” He also told reporters that he has determined what the response to the attack will be. Asked about Iran’s responsibility in the attack he had this to say, “I do hold them [Iran] responsible in the sense that they’re supplying the weapons to the people who did it.”

At this time the response has not yet begun, it is likely that it will consist of strikes on military assets in Iraq and/or Syria. Whatever the response may be, it will be remembered as a critical moment in Biden’s presidency.
