The Super Bowl

Edit: You guys, the Chiefs won

A championship hungry team. A dynasty in the making. Mr. Irrelevant. The reigning MVP. A single game unrivaled in the magnitude of its importance to a franchise and the sports world at large, the Super Bowl. On February 11th, at 6:30 pm, tens of millions, potentially over a hundred million TV’s, will tune in to watch the biggest sporting event of the year.

The Kansas City Chiefs enter the Super Bowl playing their best football of the year. Coming off of a road victory over the Baltimore Ravens, Patrick Mahomes enters his fourth Super Bowl attempting to cement himself as the heir apparent to Tom Brady’s throne as the best player in football. Some may say he’s already done that, but one more Super Bowl couldn’t hurt. He has played seventeen playoff games in his career, which amounts to a season of playoff games. In those games he’s put up some elite numbers. He has a 67.4% completion percentage, 4,802 passing yards, and 39 touchdown passes to 7 interceptions. If he were to put up these numbers in a regular season he would be the favorite to win the MVP. Playoff Mahomes is a different player than what teams face in the regular season. When he steps onto the field the game changes, suddenly he is in complete control of what happens. It’s as if the game bends at his will. It’s an incredible sight to behold, something we have become accustomed to seeing in the Super Bowl, and we once again will have the opportunity to see it.

On the other side of the sidelines the San Francisco 49ers enter the Super Bowl as odds on favorite to win. Quarterback Brock Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, commonly referred to as Mr. Irrelevant, has completely rejuvenated this franchise into a championship caliber team with a dominating offense and a stifling defense. With an MVP candidate at quarterback and another at running back in Christian McCaffrey the 49ers have the star power to win it all. After displaying immense resilience in defeating the Detroit Lions, overcoming a seventeen point deficit, tied for the third largest comeback in championship history, the 49ers proved they belong in the Super Bowl.

This will be the teams fifth matchup against each other in the past decade. Of which the Chiefs have three wins, one of them being a 20-10 win in Super Bowl 54. While the 49ers have just one win in the past ten years. This time around the 49ers are two point favorites, making them the only team to be favored in every game they play in a season, including playoff matchups. The 49ers have the opportunity to cement themselves as one of the greatest franchises in football with a win on Sunday. Currently they have five Super Bowl victories which places them one behind the Steelers and Patriots who have six apiece. On the other side of things the Chiefs have the opportunity to keep moving forward with what would be their fourth Super Bowl victory, making them the seventh team to have four or more Super Bowls in franchise history. It would be their third super bowl victory in the past five years, enshrining them as one a dynasty in the game of football.

All in all, this Super Bowl has more on the line than what meets the eye. It is not a rematch of a past Super Bowl, rather an event to see which team has grown the most since their last matchup. Both are extremely different teams, yet the question remains the same. Which can finish its successful season with one final win? The biggest win of the year. The Super Bowl.
