Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are two of my favourite shows. I don’t know about you but they are perfect shows to watch when you’re bored, need a new show, or are looking for something different to watch. While they have their differences, ATLA and LOK are based on the same general elements - pun intended. This article will provide spoilers for those who have not finished watching ATLA or LOK, you have been warned! Enjoy. ♥
Let’s start off at the beginning: Avatar Aang, the Last Airbender, was found by two people from the Water Tribe: sarcastic Sokka, and caring Katara. After Katara and Aang set off a Fire Nation trap on one of their ships by accident, the hot-headed, banished Fire Nation Prince Zuko comes to Katara and Sokka’s home, the Southern Water Tribe, to capture Aang in order to regain his honour. After Aang gives himself up to Zuko to save the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka and Katara go on a mission with Appa, Aang’s flying bison, to save him. After the four reunite, they travel across the world so Aang can master the other elements: water, earth, and fire, all the while Zuko is hunting him - until he finally realizes his true path and joins team Avatar as a better man.
ATLA is 3 seasons long, with all three seasons focusing on helping Aang defeat Fire Lord Ozai who wanted to conquer the world but LOK is four seasons and all four have a different enemy. LOK season one was Amon who was a waterbender and a bloodbender) and wanted equality but was killed in an explosion with and caused by his brother. Season 2 was Unalaq who was a waterbender and Vaatu who was the darkest spirit. Vaatu wanted the world to be thrown into chaos and so he merged with Unalaq but was defeated by Korra’s spirit (without Raav’s help). Season 3 was the Red Lotus: Zaheer who was a new Airbender; P’li who was a Combustion bender; Ghazan who was an Earthbender and Lavabender; and Ming-Hua who was a Waterbender. Zaheer wanted freedom for all but was defeated by Jinora and the new Airbenders and Korra. Season 4 was Kuvira who was an Earthbender and a Metalbender and wanted to reunite the Earth Kingdom, maintain control of the new Earth Empire, destroy those who oppose it, and reunite the Earth Empire with the United Republic of Nations but eventually surrendered when Korra made her see she’d gone too far.
While ATLA and LOK have their differences and similarities, they both are spectacular, humorous, and charming shows that are perfect for the whole family. If you haven’t watched them, I encourage you to do so.
